KAMO, a house like a recipe — the flavor of an energy transformation in Brussels, BE

Like a finely composed dish, the KAMO project blends the tradition of the Brussels townhouse with the contemporary demands of energy renovation. Beyond mere compliance with new standards lies a more intimate alchemy: the reinvention of every corner to serve life, rest, and creation.

Like a finely composed dish, the KAMO project blends the tradition of the Brussels townhouse with the contemporary demands of energy renovation. Beyond mere compliance with new standards lies a more intimate alchemy: the reinvention of every corner to serve life, rest, and creation.

At the heart of the project, the kitchen — both a family and professional laboratory — has moved. Once tucked away at the back, it now sits at the entrance, facing north, on the street front. There, it opens to the light reflected by the glazed façade of the neighboring office building, which plays with the sun’s rays like an unexpected accomplice. Between the front door and the staircase leading to the bedrooms, this threshold becomes the true hearth of the home: a place to gather, eat, talk, and create. The living room, meanwhile, calms down. A space for decantation, it welcomes the chef after the rush of evening service. In front of the open fire, the flames become meditation — breathing space, a passage between two worlds. Every square meter of this narrow house is treated with the precision of a boat. The staircase, which once ended at the second floor, now continues with a miller's stair — compact and daring — leading to the attic: a wooden cocoon, crafted to the millimeter, where one can store, study, or sleep under the stars. In its modesty, the KAMO project embodies a gentle yet determined transition. It expresses a new way of inhabiting the city: reconciling Brussels’ density with the breath of nature, transforming without erasing, inventing without imposing. Like a well-balanced recipe, this house breathes, adapts, and harmonizes — a subtle equilibrium between energy, matter, and humanity.
