Renovating Belgian coastal villas is something we do frequently. But this one was a little different. A banker by profession, in his spare time our client bought and sold vintage cars, luxury properties and works of art. We had to find a clever way to exhibit and preserve twelve vintage cars at this villa in Knokke. Added to this, it was a race against time. We had less than four months to apply for planning permission, draw up the plans and choose a contractor. Our concept was to preserve the appearance of the house while adding an ethereal walkway on a completely different scale . Its contrasting size and materials, along with the use of glass, blends the passageway into the garden. Hidden like scattered boxes around a basement courtyard, a whole stable of vintage cars is only visible when you approach this large, light-filled well. The challenge was met, but the day before work began, our client received an offer from a buyer. A businessman through and through, he was unable to refuse it. And before you ask, no, we don’t know if he kept the cars…
